ACCOUNTABILITY: The Indigenous Children’s Wellness Worker is accountable to the Executive Director.

OVERVIEW: The Indigenous Children’s Wellness (ICW) Worker promotes positive development and positive life choices of urban Indigenous children ages 7-14 years who have experienced violence. The ICW program is grounded in cultural traditions providing a sense of belonging and pride in each individual. The program offers a variety of strategies such as one-to-one activities, group activities and family circles to encourage positive behaviour, wholistic wellbeing and to address intergenerational experiences of violence, each tailored to the individual and family’s needs. The program will guide children in recognizing violence and gain the understanding that violence is not a normal aspect of life. Through personal support and cultural resources, the program provides children with education and knowledge to help on their healing journey and promote optimal levels of understanding, reasoning and daily success after violence has occurred.

EDUCATION/ QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Shall possess post-secondary diploma in Indigenous social work or related field and/or 2 years of relevant experience
  • Knowledge and awareness of Indigenous culture and history, with particular emphasis on family violence and the relationship to child welfare.
  • Strong understanding of the Child and Family Services Act and Ontario Children’s Aid Societies, with particular emphasis on how they impact Indigenous families.
  • Must possess skills and experience in presenting educational workshops and facilitating groups.
  • Self-motivated, able to schedule and prioritize work.
  • Good judgment, adaptability and willingness to learn.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with staff and community members.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Knowledge of the Friendship Centre movement, its aims and objectives.
  • Awareness of the North Bay Indigenous Friendship Centre’s programs and services.
  • Strong listening, oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications and using a database reporting system.
  • Basic research skills required.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous cultures.
  • Ability to speak Cree and/or Ojibway is an asset.
  • Current Standard First Aid and Level C CPR; WHMIS; and Food Handler Certificate.
  • Must posses a valid driver’s license, have access to a safe and reliable vehicle, $2M liability insurance, and provide a drivers abstract
  • Criminal Records Check/Vulnerable Persons Check.

Indigenous Mental Health & Wellness Coordinator

STATUS: Full time, permanent

ACCOUNTABILITY: Executive Director

SALARY RANGE: $57,300 – $77,568/year

SUMMARY: The Indigenous Mental Health and Wellness Program Coordinator will be responsible for:

  • counselling Indigenous individuals in the urban area of North Bay who are seeking assistance with drug
  • and/or alcohol addictions. The Indigenous Mental Health and Wellness Program Coordinator will
  • service both youth and adults through one-to-one and group counselling. Services include education
  • and prevention programs, referral to treatment programs, and aftercare programs. The Indigenous
  • Mental Health and Wellness Program Coordinator will act as an intake worker and/or referrer
  • accordingly if the case is not within assigned jurisdiction. Whenever possible, the Indigenous Mental
  • Health and Wellness Program Coordinator will work with other North Bay Indian Friendship Centre
  • (NBIFC) programs or other agencies to determine and fulfill the short and long-term needs of
  • Indigenous clientele.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or related field or three (3) years of relevant experience
  • Strong knowledge of urban Indigenous issues and needs, and experience working with urban Indigenous individuals
  • Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), Crisis Intervention Training, and First Aid certificates are essential
  • Mental Health First Aid is considered an asset
  • Knowledge of Global Appraisal of Individual Needs – Short Screener (GAIN-SS) systems
  • Knowledge of the inner-workings of the local justice system
  • Experience in compiling and delivering succinct reports in a timely manner
  • Experience in facilitating programming from development to delivery
  • Strong advocacy and/or lobbying skills
  • Deep understanding of severe mental, physical health, and substance abuse issues and symptoms
  • Dealing with clients in a considerate, open-minded, and compassionate manner
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, reporting databases, and related technology
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work as a team member and independently
  • Maintains personal and professional integrity, and handles confidential information with discretion
  • Valid driver’s license with clean abstract, appropriate insurance, and access to reliable transportation
  • Criminal record check with vulnerable sector is required
  • Ability to work flexible hours
