Indigenous Language Conference 2026

On March 4th & 5th The North Bay Indigenous Friendship Centre held their 3rd annual Indigenous Language Conference with this year having the amazing Susan Aglukark as the Keynote Speaker!

During the two day event, Susan went over her life story as written in her book, and took time to explain to the audience what chapters of her life inspired the songs she wrote; with the beautiful addition of Susan singing the songs herself to everyone, it made the audience feel more connected to her.

There were a plethora of workshops teaching languages in different engaging ways such as bingo, medicine teachings, games etc. It gave all the participants an environment to have fun and solidify their learning in different ways.

On Day two it was one of our workshop teachers’ birthday and to celebrate, in the morning MC Bob Goulais taught everyone how to sing Happy Birthday in Anishinaabemowin, and later in the afternoon Susan sang Happy Birthday to her herself.

It was a magical and fun two days that ended with wise words from our panel of teachers giving tips on how to keep up the motivation for learning the language.

We give wish everyone luck on their language journey!
